A Winter Weekend in Slovenia: Winter Hiking
In January, I hatched an escape plan to disappear off to Slovenia for a long weekend. I was lucky enough to have a friend studying abroad in the capital of Ljubljana and so there was no excuse not to go!
Slovenia is becoming increasingly popular with outdoor enthusiasts- the country is compact but packs a real punch with its majestic mountains, valleys and rivers which are all easily accessible by car from Ljubljana.
We hired a car for the weekend and set off on a little road trip through Triglav National Park.
Hiking in Winter in Slovenia is magical- there is hardly anyone around and the waterfalls become frozen. We did two wonderful waterfall hikes, and it was like entering an ice kingdom with icicles hanging over rock faces and snow sprinkling the trees.
Hike 1: Pericnik Waterfall: 6.13km walk - we had to park a little further away due to the snow as the car park was not accessible.
Hike 2: Martuljek Falls: Kranjska Gora is a good base from which to park your car and explore these twin falls- the higher and lower falls.
